Ludum Dare 28 Post Mortem

So I did it! I submitted an entry to Ludum Dare and I used Phaser as I previously stated. The game I made is called A Weird Love Game and is definitely a weird entry. My game isn't even really a game, you play as some pixel British guy and you run away from this girl before you fall in love with her and it's game over.

PLAY | ENTRY

This was my first time entering as a compo rather than a jam. I worked completely by myself and almost lost all motivation half way through.

This game was initially based on my idea to make a game which was based of "You only get one... lover" which didn't work out too well. A friend suggested I make a game where you perform tasks to keep your love in love with you or else she will leave you. Well... that's weird right? Idk, I wasn't really ready for that.

So my game took a different direction. It's now some weird commentary about love and possibly marriage. I guess the message this game is supposed to convey is that falling in love with a girl is inevitable... I've seen many people crippled by "love" that's it's somewhat ludicrous from my point of view. I'm not sure if I'm going to work on this game as a post LD... it definitely needs some improvements that wouldn't be too difficult to make.

I wrote the game using Phaser as I had said before. It's weird working in Javascript as opposed to a compiled language. I appreciate the highlighting that Notepad++ has but I miss IDEs that will auto complete and stuff. Also Phaser as some weird things about it. Like the camera isn't very smooth as you may notice. I was looking at some other HTML5 libraries that I might try.

I'm gonna use Phaser!

I found a super awesome framework for HTML5 games called Phaser! I'm gonna use it now for the upcoming Ludum Dare!

I'm in for Ludum Dare 28...

I've been missing game Jams... and I've been really wanting to make games. So I'm gonna do the Ludum Dare next weekend even if it kills me. ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ

I've kinda been in between languages. Before I was using AS3 + Flixel to make my games... which was great! :D Unfortunately, AS3 seems to be dying and no one wants to work with me in it. :<

I was looking at a few programs like Unity 4.3 and Game Maker but a drag and drop interface doesn't seem like something that would be very pleasant to work with.

So, enter Javascript. I'm slightly familiar with Javascript, although I don't know it as well as something like PHP. It does look promising for game development. It was scary at first because it's an interpreted language. But Google Chrome's console and tools like Visual Studio make it seem better to work with. I have also been looking at libraries like Crafty, ImpactJS and Ludus...

Anyways, I hope to complete a fairly decent game for this upcoming Ludum Dare and I'm excited to play any other games that come out of it.

Oh, and feel free to bug me on Twitter. @_dmitrix

Some updates!

Hello! Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted anything on my blog. So here are some updates!

 Web Development

So, I'm going to attempt to make a little bit of extra money through freelance web development. Right now I'm still working finishing my own website and filling up my portfolio. Soon I'll be looking for clients, preferably local. You can look at my website now at: dmitrix.com/preview

Game Development

It's been awhile since I've done much with game development. Once again I'm trying to transition to a new programming language, probably HTML5 and Javascript. Unfortunately I missed the last Ludum Dare because I was going on vacation. :< But the next Ludum Dare is coming around in about a month and I'm going to be prepared for that! :D

I was going to try to enter the recent Shark Jam mini-ld but I didn't finish my entry. Here's what I had...

(Trying to move away from pixel art graphics)

(Sorry about the lack of sound.)

(background scrolls)

Making progress with da code! - Update #5

Soooo, the code is just now taking form. We got auto tiling and moving working. Time to code in potato collecting and stuff!

(Art not final)

Nevermind. I hate LÖVE! ^_^ - Update #4

Ya, I like AS3 alot better than LÖVE! Sorry, we're alittle indecisive...

Dang it! I guess it's back to LÖVE *sigh* - Update #3

Ya...... Things aren't going too well with AS3 + Flixel. I'm too distracted with art at the moment and The Phantom Lemon can't really code in AS3 + Flixel. Anyways, I guess we are writing the game in Lua + LÖVE again. Maybe I'll port it over to flash later..... >_<

Ludum Dare 26 - Update #2

First night of the Ludum Dare. We got a solid idea and about half of the art done! Tomorrow we're going to have to hit the code hard. Anyways, I'm about to go to bed.

Ludum Dare 26 - Update #1

Ludum Dare started a few hours ago and the theme is minimalism. Things are going alright. Our idea is to make a game about a potato farmer. You go around collecting potatoes and you might possibly have to fight off zombie potatoes or something. Anyways, I made some pixel art and The Phantom Lemon has some basic code going.

Anyways, things are going well so far...

LUDUM DARE STARTS IN 5 MINUTES!!!!!!!! #amazing #awesome #excited

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

(Potato Fireworks!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Ludum Dare is in a few weeks!

It's almost time for Ludum Dare 26! I will probably be entering this Ludum Dare with VILLAINTHROPY if I can get him to make art for me. My tools of choice nowadays are Action Script 3 and Flixel with FlashDevelop.

Stay tuned for more, hopefully I will be able to release a timelapse along with my game!

Finally, a Proper LP Video

I've been wanting to create some Let's Play videos for some time. Now I have finally made one. I've decided that the main issue is that I can't make videos by myself. My friend Ty adds to the level of entertainment. *btw, episode one will be released sometime soon.

Minecraft LPs?

So I'm thinking about doing a few Minecraft Let's Play videos with some friends of mine. I started out by testing the recording software with Super Hexagon:

This "test" footage shows off the floating island we are working on:

I realize that the sound might be a little off, I'll try and fix it. In the mean time, stay tuned for possible videos in the future.

SPACE

I wrote most of the code for this game back in February. After a few tweaks I thought I would release it.

Kongregate Games logo

The code for this game is really messy and I don't really want to work with it anymore, but I might release a update which uses the Kongregate API for a high score leader board or something.

Shoot em' Up - A Flash Game

For some reason Action Script 3 and Flixel seemed slightly too difficult to learn. I think I may have broke the ice a bit and I have now made this simply shoot em' up flash game. Play it now on Kongregate!

Love Ship

The Phantom and I are currently working on a space shoot em' up game called Love Ship as our January entry for OneGameaMonth. Check out some of our "concept" art:

We will most likely be finished with this game before Wednesday, so stay tuned by following me on Twitter or following this blog!

The Text Engine - v0.0.2

Today I made some improvements to the Text Engine interface!

What's New:

-A blinking cursor
-Backspace!
-Score and move counter
-"help" command

Something I realized after showing this to a few people is not everyone understands what a text adventure is. If you don't know what a text adventure is all about I recommend you watch this and play this.

The "Text Engine"

It may sound like a step back but I am currently working on a text adventure! I am calling this project the "text engine" for now.

If you would like to try out the "text engine" play the small demo I made...

Post Monkie Jam - Multiple Levels

If you played our entry for the New Year Game Jam then you probably noticed how short the game was. To combat that, I am currently working on support for multiple levels and level selections. I will release a post jam build of the game after I complete the multiple level system and I finish polishing up the game, most likely tomorrow.

New Year Game Jam 2012-2013 Entered!

I like the feeling of having released a game only three hours into 2013. The Phantom and I have spent the yesterday and the night before developing a game we call Monkie. Unlike our Ludum Dare entry, Bunnie, there is absolutely no "art" or music. Enjoy racing an evil block monkie to the finish.
